Activity 2.4: Behaviorism in Practice

First, I chose this because I absolutely love this show! This clip explicitly shows a classic, and funny, example of positive reinforcement being put into practice. Sheldon is attempting to use a continuous form of positive reinforcement to train Penny; every time she exhibits the behavior he desires of her, she receives a chocolate.

  1. Hey Tia, I loved this video! I have never watched this show, but it seems entertaining. I thought it clearly showed how well positive reinforcement can work and how easily it can be used. I think it went well with the James readings this week in demonstrating how teachers need to change students' behavior through behavior modification. (reinforcing her appropriate behavior and not the bad). One hard aspect though, as we mentioned in our group discussion, is discovering what is reinforcing for every student.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I definitely agree the use of behavior modification is a good tool. Similar to this clip, I find it so interesting that people do not realize that their behavior is being modified with the reinforcement. I wonder if it would have gone differently had the reinforcement been verbal as opposed to something materialized? I think this also goes along with what we mentioned regarding understanding what may be reinforcing to the child, trying to figure out if verbal reinforcement compared to other types is more beneficial or ineffective to behavior modification

  2. This show has great examples for lots of things, I've found! I don't know what season of the show this is, but I do know that unfortunately Sheldon was not able to keep Penny from talking all the time without giving her chocolate. Kohn would have gotten one point for this one!

  4. What a wonderful example!! I love this show and think Skinner would be very proud of Sheldon :-)
I also found it interesting that in many cases people do not realize their behavior is being modified, just like in the clip from the office that we watched in the last blog post. Using this technique with students and helping them to change behaviors without them even knowing what is going on can be an extremely powerful tool for a teacher!!
